Save Faith Adejare’s Life, She Needs N35M For Kidney Transplant (pics)

When 24-year-old Faith Adejare got admitted to Federal Univeristy of Agriculture, Abeokuta to study Home Science Management in 2020, she was full of hopes and looking forward to a brighter future. She hoped to finish her 4-year program and be able to fulfill her heart’s desires and to be able to contribute positively to her country.

Unfortunately, fate had another thing prepared for the innocent Faith. In January 2021, when she was in 100 level, Faith took ill, thinking it was a normal malaria illness that is common to us in the tropical part of Africa. She was treated with the normal malaria drugs, but as time went by, she was not getting better. Her elder sister, Iretioluwa Adejare, who is also studying with her at the same university, had to call home because Faith was having difficulty breathing and complained of general weakness and constant urination at night.

Her mother, Bose Elizabeth Adejare, had to come from Ibadan, where the family lives, and rushed down to her school in Abeokuta and took her back to Academy General Hospital, Olomi, in Ibadan. Her case was getting worse; hence, preliminary tests were conducted, and she was diagnosed with high blood pressure and an ulcer. She was then treated, and after spending a week at the hospital, she was discharged.

Despite the treatment, she was not feeling better, so she was visiting the hospital for more treatments. Around May 2021, Faith had a serious convulsion and fell into a coma. The hospital then referred her to University College Hospital (UCH Ibadan), where she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.

She was in a coma for 4 days, and by the time she woke up, she was placed on hemodialysis. Though she was still passing out urine, her urine had a very high content of protein, creatinine, and some electrolytes.

About a month later, she was discharged at UCH, but sadly again, she went into a coma again. At this stage her parents were advised to take her to a more equipped private clinic (Rencare), a center specialized for kidney patients. It was at this hospital she was brought back from a coma. At this stage, she was no longer breathing, and her blood level (PCV) had gone as low as 10-12%. Also, she stopped passing out urine on her own completely, even till this moment. She urgently needs a kidney transplant operation since her two kidneys have packed up completely. The operation was valued to be N22M last year, but today it is N35M.

Currently, Faith has been going for dialysis eight times in a month (twice in a week) at Rencare kidney centre. Each session excluding other expenses cost N67,000. But her doctor keeps reminding the family of the need to have transplant as soon as possible, because if it is not done early enough, her health might deteriorate to the level that the transplant might not possible again.

These four years of Faith’s illness have taken a toll on the family physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. The entire family has suffered untold hardships to take care of her. It is becoming more and more difficult to take care of Faith’s three sisters that are still studying both in secondary school and in the university.

They urgently need help from Nigerians and all over the world to save her from this debilitating illness.

One thing I admire about Faith is that despite her health conditions, she did not stop her education. Although she had to stop initially for a while, when she realized that her health was not getting better, she mustered enough courage to continue with her education. She is currently in 400-level, her final year at the university.
