Gospel singer Funi “Khavhanndwele” Mbedzi was allegedly shot and killed by her husband during a church service at Makonde Shadani village in Limpopo on Saturday, 30 March at about 18:00.
According to a statement by the South African Police Services (SAPS), the suspect entered the church premises while the congregation was engaged in worship and callously fired multiple shots at the musician.
“The suspect, whose age is currently unknown, fled the scene in a silver-grey Toyota Corolla following the abhorrent act. While the motive behind this appalling incident remains unclear, domestic violence cannot be ruled out,” Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said.
According to the Limpopo Chronicle, the man, 54, handed himself to the police.
Mbedzi was a member of the award-winning gospel ensemble, Worship House. The 45-year-old singer had been a member of the group since 2004 and was featured on the latest album Worship House Project 20 on the song Ori dekela tafula.
In a brief statement on Monday, Worship House wrote on Instagram: “It is with heavy hearts that one of our Lead singers has passed away. Funi ‘Khavhanndwele’ Mbedzi started with Worship house since Project 2. She will be dearly missed. We will share more info regarding her burial soon.”
The music group also postponed its upcoming event.
