Political analyst Babajide Ogunsanwo has described the recent Edo governorship election as a significant moment in the state’s political history. In an interview with Channels Television, Ogunsanwo noted that the election saw All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Monday Okpebholo emerge victorious, despite winning the majority of votes in only one of Edo’s three senatorial zones—Edo North.

According to Ogunsanwo, this result marks a departure from Edo’s traditional political pattern, where candidates who won in more than one zone usually had a smoother path to victory. In contrast, Okpebholo’s win came despite his main rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), securing the majority in both Edo Central and Edo South.

He highlighted that this is the first time in Edo’s history that a gubernatorial candidate has been declared winner while losing in two of the three zones. Ogunsanwo suggested that this might signal a broader transformation in the state’s political landscape.

“There are those who’ll look at this result and say it signals the end times. Some will look at it and say nothing is impossible,” Ogunsanwo remarked.

“For the first time, based on the declared results, the winner secured the majority in only Edo North, while Edo Central and Edo South were won by the PDP candidate. This is unprecedented in Edo’s history.”
