October 20.10.2020 was the day wicked federal government sent out armed soldiers to massacre peaceful Nigerian youths at the Lekki toll gate, who were simply asking for a better deal from their government.
The Federal government ordered armed soldiers to pump hot lead (bullets) into the protesting crowd. Many innocent youths were killed, wounded and maimed on that sad Tuesday night.
Despite repeated denials from the government that it was not a massacre, many parents buried their loved ones quietly and asked for a redress in law courts.
Lagos state government hurriedly set up a kangaroo investigative panel to look into circumstances surrounding the dastard act. As usual and common to other kangaroo investigative panels inaugurated in the past, that was tailored to have expected outcomes, nothing substantial, incriminating or circumstantial evidence came out of the “arrangee” panel.
Although the panel has paid compensations running into billions of Naira to the affected families but unfortunately, no one has been brought to book. The families of the victims had been abandoned and left to mourn their losses quietly.
Wednesday 20.10.2021 came and Nigerian youths planned to mark the first year anniversary to celebrate the fallen heroes but the federal government panicked, threatened fire and brimstones not to allow the remembrance to take place.
Before one could blink, the entire stretch of the Lekki toll gate had been cordoned off with fully armed policemen taking strategic positions to intimidate and ward off protesters. Nigerian youths unperturbed, came out in large numbers, blaring horns from long rows of vehicles to mark the first year anniversary. Some of the protesters were manhandled, assaulted, arrested and bundled into the black Maria that was parked at the scene. Many innocent passersby were wrongly arrested, journalists covering the protests were beaten and bundled into the van.
A Uber driver, Clement Akintunde was beaten, bruised, pepper spray was pumped directly into his face and was bundled into the waiting van.
Adefemi Akinsanya, a female journalist with AriseTV was seen manhandled by an unruly and aggressive police officer in a bid to wrestle a drone used in covering the protest. However reasons prevailed when the Commissioner of Police Lagos command, Hakeem Odumosu visited the scene and ordered protesters to be released.
At this juncture, we at olumuyiwa.com.ng commends AriseTV station for standing stoically among the notable television stations to cover the protest of the first year anniversary of EndSARS protest, #EndSARSMemorial. While other puppet news stations like TVC, AIT and Channels TV chickened out, Arise TV barring all odds identified with the noble cause.
We use this opportunity to thank the urbane Lagos state commissioner of police, Hakeem Odumosu in freeing the protesters.
While the families of the victims are waiting for that day of redemption, when justice will be served to those who killed innocent lives wasted on that sad day, we say to our fallen heroes that you will forever be in our hearts and your deaths shall not be in vain.
Never again will Nigerian youths be cowed!
